Thanks to all who answered

By Barbara Lee

To those who took the time to read, complete, and return the Burvey for the Gay Community Center, the Supportive Friends of the Gay Community Center wish to extend their thanks for your valuable input. Although the number of responses was small, the comments and suggestions are enlightening and will assist us in planning programs in the future.

Before detailing/describing the results of the survey, several preliminary observations are to be noted: First, the results of this type of survey cannot and should not be construed to be representative of the thoughts or feelings of the Greater Cleveland gay community. Second, because of the small rate of return, the responses also cannot be thought of as reprsentative of the beliefs of the gay population that reads High Gear. At best, the responses may be viewed as descriptive of the interests and thoughts of a small yet concerned segment of High Gear readers.

The following is a summary of responses to each question in the survey:

With regard to program expansion into social and recreational areas, those who answered the question concurred that the

community center should do so. Respondants said they'd personally participate in activities (in order of most to least frequently selected activity): Group excursions out of town; group trips to area concerts, spoarting events etc.; bowling: cards. Less frequently selected activities included pool, chess, bridge, ping pong. Under "other" suggestions included group trips to the baths, backgammon, swimming parties, camping activities, arts and crafts sessions.

Respondants also considered what activities would draw the participation of other gays. In order of selection, they thought the following would be popular. group trips to area concerts, sports events, etc.; cards; ping pong, pool, bowling, baseball, chess, or badmenton.

Respondents were nearly unanimous in agreeing that the Center should continue and expand support services to gay people. These services include counseling by gay volunteers; information and referral to psychiatrists, psychologists, social workes able to counsel gays with emotional, mental, interpersonal problems; information and referral to attorneys who accept/have worked with gay clients and the legal issues they face; information and referral to medical doctors known to treat and be

Our lives are as art galleries constantly on exhibit. We paint very clear pictures of our minds for anyone who cares to remain an observer of us long enough.

Unfortunately, most people have taken too much interest in their own paintings, and lose out on so many other people's beauty.

sympathetic to the concerns of gays. Several gays suggested that information related to employment, counseling and housing, etc. be offered through the center.

Respondents were receptive to the Center's providing eduational activities. Rap sessions, programs with guest speakers and panelists, and workshops were endorsed. Several respondants volunteered that the center should do educational promotions in the non-gay community and should increase advertising to expand gay community awareness of the center's varied activities.

Most respondants said they'd participate in or utilize the abovementioned services if offered by the center.

Varied suggestions were offered by those who answered the question concerning funding ideas for the Gay Community Center: Several suggested that we solicit support from area bars, baths, businesses known to have a significant gay clientele; this we have started to do. More than one respondant suggested that we write up funding proposals to various foundations. (This to is being done.) Other ideas include: having a flea market or garage sale, having benefits dinners or cabarets, organizing a boat trip, charging nominal fees for counseling/worksops/etc.. soliciting donations at the rap sessions.

The final segment of the survey sought demographic information from respondants. From this data we learned that the great majority of respondants were male and white. They were nearly equally divided in living on the

east and west sides and in living in the city and suburbs. The vast majority said they read HighGear, regularly; a few said they only read it sometimes. Most said they had either gone to or utilized services of the Center.
